There are several different factors contributing to the development of the forehead wrinkles including:
- normal aging
- stress
- cigarette smoking
- mimicry
- gravity
Horizontal and Vertical Wrinkles
Forehead wrinkles occur both horizontally and vertically. The horizontal lines are the most common and pronounced, appearing across the surface of the forehead in wide swaths. They can occur anywhere between the hairline and the top of the eyebrows and can vary in depth and length. Exactly what individual forehead wrinkles look like depend entirely upon the underlying causes. Forehead wrinkles usually begin to appear around middle age, becoming deeper and more pronounced as we get older.
Vertical wrinkles are usually less pronounced and occur just above the nose and between the eyebrows. These wrinkles are less common but can be just as annoying to those who have them. Vertical wrinkles are almost always caused by repetitive facial expressions that push the skin together between the eyes.
Stress and Mimicry
In addition to normal aging, stress and mimicry are the most common causes of forehead wrinkles. When we’re young, our skin is very elastic and able to snap back into place after it’s been stretched. Unfortunately, the skin loses elasticity as we age, and frequent facial expressions and muscle movements can cause a skin to begin bearing of the marks left by those movements. Once forehead wrinkles develop, they usually get worse over time.
Stress is one of the most important factors in the equation due to the fact that it simply has bad effects on the entire body. Where the face is concerned, stress causes people to do such things as rub their foreheads, hold their heads in their hands, experience frequent emotional outbursts, and carry worried or depressed expressions on the face. All of these things contribute to muscle movements that can result in the formation of forehead wrinkles. It stands to reason that the reduction of stress is one of the best weapons in fighting them.
Treating Forehead Wrinkles
There are several things we can do to prevent the onset of forehead wrinkles and reduce the ones that we already have. Among those things are a proper diet, good exercise, the reduction of stress, and careful attention in avoiding repetitive facial expressions. We can also include in our daily hygiene regimen the use of a wrinkle cream which helps to rebuild and strengthen the skin. With daily application and a concerted effort to change our habits, forehead wrinkles can be avoided.
